Material classification
SRL™
Specification-Grade Recovered Lumber (SRL™) is Northmark's internal material classification for non-structural recovered wood. It sets the grading, moisture and traceability requirements recovered fibre must meet before it carries the SRL designation. SRL is developed, governed and maintained by Northmark. It is a private commercial specification, not an external certification, industry consensus standard or regulatory instrument.
SRL is designed for architectural, commercial and manufacturing applications where recovered wood has to perform consistently and be specified with confidence.

Status
SRL is specification-defined and supply-pending. The Technical Standard is in pre-publication draft, being refined using field data from the upcoming recovery pilot. Commercial supply follows commissioning of the Edmonton Integrated Hub.
Scope of application

Designed for
- Interior and exterior finishing: Flooring, panelling, trim, feature walls and cladding.
- Manufacturing: S4S panel stock, furniture components and millwork blanks.
- Architectural: Stair treads, benchtops and applications that need recorded moisture and dimensional consistency.
Outside scope
- Structural and load-bearing use: Not for framing, trusses or primary structural support.
- Engineered load applications: Not rated for engineered load calculations.
Designation
All SRL material is labelled Non-Structural Use Only.
How SRL is governed

Grading
- Every piece is assigned a grade under documented criteria, keyed to the applications it can serve.
Moisture
- Moisture specification is recorded on every unit, with kiln-drying specified where the application requires it.
Traceability
- Each unit is stamped with a batch mark at milling and carries a Batch ID linked to its origin neighbourhood, establishing a documented chain of custody from recovery through release.
Quality assurance
- Material is verified against its grade, moisture and profile specifications before release.
Specifying SRL
SRL specifications are designed to be distributed through architecture and design libraries and through Trail Building Supplies' procurement systems, so specifiers and buyers can reach them within the tools they already use. The specification covers grade definitions and application mapping, moisture specifications and verification criteria, Batch ID record structure, quality assurance and release criteria, and the interim carbon accounting methodology.

Environmental data
Diversion
- SRL keeps recoverable wood out of landfill through a documented recovery pathway.
Carbon
- Carbon stored in the fibre and emissions avoided by displacing new lumber are reported separately, under an interim methodology that uses published industry benchmarks. They are not additive and are not presented as product claims.
Verification
- A third-party verified Life Cycle Assessment and Environmental Product Declaration are in development. They will replace the interim methodology on publication.
